The geology program at Pusan National University, taking over the Department of Geography and Geology which was opened in 1953 and closed in 1961, was established in 1964. It has provided a focus for the mapping, the collection and interpretation of field data and development of the geological resources covering all corners of the Republic of Korea. Thedepartment has also expanded the application of principles of physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics into the study of the earth, its environment, its origin and the processes by which it has been transformed and reconstituted through time. Departmental faculty has been recognized nationally and internationally for excellence in teaching and research. The curriculum of the department provides a base of required courses for the undergraduate and contains a wide variety of more specialized upper-division courses that reflect the diversity of the geological sciences. The department is well equipped with modern analytical and experimental facilities and has sizable research/teaching collections of rocks, minerals and fossils. The Department offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Geology, specializing in the following research areas:
- Geology
- Clay Mineralogy
- Igneous Petrology
- Sedimentology and Sedimentary Petrology
- Paleontology and Stratigraphy
- Structural Geology and Tectonics
- Geophysics and Paleomagnetism
- Hydrogeology and Environmental Geology
- Volcanology and Geochemistry
- Resource Geology and Economic Geology
